Untold Cards

What is a Race Card?

Race Cards are red in coloration and they are the single card you must have to play a character in Untold. In creating a character, they’re the first card you must select and when taking damage, as soon as you flip your Race Card, your character is dead. Race Cards define what kind of thing: person, critter or what’s’it, your character physically is and gives you the basic information you need to play the race.

On every Race Card, you’ll find the following information:

# Label What’s’it Mean?
1 Name Er...the name of the Race
2 Swap Icon The swap type needed to play this card.
3 Cost (UP) Icon Cost of the card; you must pay this to add it to your character deck.

What is an Aspect Card?

A yellow color sets Aspect cards apart from the other cards in the Untold pack. There are three Aspects in all: Body, Mind, and Soul, each representing a facet of his/her core being that they may focus on. Body Cards mean your character is generally good at physical activities and grants them bonuses to physical Power Cards. Mind Cards mean your character is generally good at mental activities and grants them bonuses to mental Power Cards. Soul means your character is generally good at spiritual/supernatural pursuits and grants them bonuses to supernatural Power Cards.

The cards grant three bonuses tied to the Aspect: Attack (ATK) - the left number, Defense (DEF) - the center number, and Boost - the right number. The greater the Attack bonus the better your character is at “hitting” with Powers that require a Combat Roll. While a good Defense bonus can enable your character to avoid the effects of those types of Power. Boosting is the natural ability of a character to intrinsically enhance some (NOT ALL) of their Powers - the Boost bonus required and the effect of Boosting is noted on Power Cards if they can be boosted.

Each card also provides Vitality (VIT) which is not tied to the Aspect and increases the character’s ability to handle damage.

On every Aspect Card, you’ll find the following information:

# Label What’s’it Mean?
1 Name Er...the name of the Aspect
2 Swap Icon The swap type needed to play this card.
3 Cost (UP) Icon Cost of the card; you must pay this to add it to your character deck.
4 Body* The Body bonuses of the Race: Body Attack (Body ATK), Body Defense (Body DEF), and Body Boost.
5 Mind* The Mind bonuses of the Race: Mind Attack (Mind ATK), Mind Defense (Mind DEF), and Mind Boost.
6 Soul* The Soul bonuses of the Race: Soul Attack (Soul ATK), Soul Defense (Soul DEF), and Soul Boost.
7 Vitality (VIT) Icon* This adds to the Total Vitality (VIT) of your character.
8 Information* Denotes special information about the Aspect.

* - Please note that the following items MAY or MAY NOT appear on your Aspect Card, depending on which Aspect Card it is.

What is a Power Card?

Adorned with a lovely blue color, Power Cards will likely make up the bulk of your character deck. Powers are all of the groovy stuff that your character can do, so when Sarge leaps wildly from one wall to another and scales a building, that’d be the “Mad Hops” Power Card she’s using. By the same token, the thing that makes Elfie McArcher able to split an orc’s hair with an arrow a league away is the “Unreal Shot” Power Card. Power Cards are those that define all of the special moves, tactics, weapons, or skills that your character has or has access to.

On every Power Card, you’ll find the following information:

# Label What’s’it Mean?
1 Name Er...the name of the Power
2 Swap Icon The swap type needed to play this card.
3 Cost (UP) Icon Cost of the card; you must pay this to add it to your character deck.
4 Level The Level of the Power.
5 Body* The Body bonuses of the Race: Body Attack (Body ATK), Body Defense (Body DEF), and Body Boost.
6 Mind* The Mind bonuses of the Race: Mind Attack (Mind ATK), Mind Defense (Mind DEF), and Mind Boost.
7 Soul* The Soul bonuses of the Race: Soul Attack (Soul ATK), Soul Defense (Soul DEF), and Soul Boost.
8 Picture A lovely artistic interpretation of the Power in action, or a symbol depicting the type of Power!
9 Vitality (VIT) Icon* This adds to the Total Vitality (VIT) of your character.
10 Attributes Denote how long to activate the Power, who it affects, and how long it lasts.
11 Information Denotes special information about the Power; be sure and read this!

What is a Bane Card?

Not everything that happens to a character during the course of their lives is a good thing. People contract diseases, undergo changes, and these possibilities are only expanded upon within the realm of an RPG. In short, not every occurrence (or every card for that matter) is a boon; some are a bane. As such, with a black stripe to signify their negative effects on characters, Bane Cards represent these harmful events that can occur to a character throughout their “lives” during the RPG. There are three types of Bane Cards and all are usually the purview of the GM. These three types are as follows:

  • Environmental Effects (such as freezing to death in the arctic cold)
  • Negative Conditions brought on by Powers (such as being surprised or immobilized)
  • Disability (such as being blind or hobbled)

In most scenarios, your GM will control Bane Cards and hand them to the Player when the in-game situation warrants them being used. However, some GM’s might allow their characters to actually select from the disability category, in order to enhance role-playing opportunities and gain additional UP through their use. We recommend this sort of activity for advanced players only, as well as GM’s comfortable enough with the Untold rule-set, but if you meet these two requirements, then feel free to do so. Often selecting a disability Bane card for your character pushes them into role-playing directions that they would have never gone – nor would you have attempted, as a Player – before!

The way Bane Cards work is simple – if you receive one as a Player, you must immediately put the card in play as a part of your Character Deck. This will usually result in your character receiving various penalties, which must be subtracted from your character’s applicable bonuses (i.e. ATK, DEF, Aspect Bonuses, etc.). Also, all on-card notes must be followed by the character until the card is no longer in play.

On every Bane Card, you’ll find the following information:

# Label What’s’it Mean?
1 Name Er...the name of the Bane
2 Swap Icon The swap type needed to play this card.
3 Cost (UP) Icon Cost of the card; you must pay this to add it to your character deck.
4 Level The level of the Bane Card.
5 Body* The bonuses/penalties of the Bane: Body Attack (Body ATK), Body Defense (Body DEF), and Body Boost
6 Mind* The bonuses/penalties of the Bane: Mind Attack (Mind ATK), Mind Defense (Mind DEF), and Mind Boost.
7 Soul* The bonuses/penalties of the Bane: Soul Attack (Soul ATK), Soul Defense (Soul DEF), and Soul Boost.
8 Picture An image of what's happening to the character – flip the card over and see even more snazzy art!
9 Vitality (VIT) Icon* This adds (or subtracts) to the Total Vitality (VIT) of your character.
10 Attributes* Denote how long to activate the Integral Power (IP) of the Bane, who it affects, and how long it lasts.
11 Magnitude Icon* Displays the magnitude of this card.
12 Information Denotes special information about the Bane; be sure and read this!
13 Boost Info* If shown, this denotes what type of boost this card receives.

* - Please note that the following items MAY or MAY NOT appear on your Bane Card, depending on what type Of Bane Card it is.

What is a Minion Card?

Minion Cards are a special type of card in Untold that are really the combination of a Race Card, Aspect Cards, and possibly a number of Power Cards. They are meant to be one-stop, quick characters for the GM - everything they need for a simple monster, minion, or non-player character. However Minion Cards also have uses for players (think henchmen, familiars, and possibly more, but more on that as Untold grows), and they will be the primary cards players use in Untold: Battle. Minion Cards are purple in coloration and they are all adorned with some amazing art.

On every Minion Card you’ll find the following information:

# Label What’s’it Mean?
1 Name Er...the name of the Minion
2 Swap Icon The swap type needed to play this card.
3 Cost (UP) Icon Cost of the card; you must pay this to add it to your character deck.
4 Level The level of the Minion's Integral Power (IP)**.
