Ok, so this is an idea I've been sitting on for a while. With the current...distribution of players, these rules might be better for a con where multiple Untold players could congregate.
What I was thinking were Untold Tourney Rules. Other card games have tourney rules, so why not Untold? I think it would be something fun to implement in cons where Untold is demo'ing. It would expose players to Untold: Battle and encourage competitive play. Here are the rules that I thought of:
1.) All decks have to be confirmed by a tourney judge. No decks may include beta-test cards of any form. Players may not add cards to their decks mid tourney.
2.) Card deck limits will vary according to the tourney. However, the amount of UP available to each player should be taken into consideration. A minimum amount of cards may implemented if necessary. Players are not required to use the max amount of UP available for their decks or even each round. However, they must comply with the card limits.
3.) Players have the option to build a Reserve Pool: an amount cards that may be swapped with other cards in a players Battle deck between rounds. The total amount of cards in the Reserve Pool may not exceed 25 cards. Players are not required to max out their Reserve Pool, but the contents of the Reserve must included in the original decklist. Players are not required to have/use a Reserve Pool.
4.) Each player is responsible for tracking damage and other conditions on their minions. This includes tracking overcome checks, banes, etc.
Failure to comply with any of the rules will result in elimination from the tourney and some form of public humiliation (probably something involving Hall or Ashy).
As a prize, we could do something like a promo Minion or Power card available only at that tourney or con, or con season, or whatever. And maybe even a battle deck as the grand pize.
Jennifer also came up with the idea of doing a Flux Tournament, with special rules. Here are a few preliminary ideas we had:
- When people register, assign them a faction (not necessarily the one they are playing). The number of factions will depend on the number of players. At the start of the tourney, opponents are assigned randomly. At the end of the 3-4 rounds, have a flux portal open up. Then you can do something like the top ranking and the lowest ranking players of a faction play each other to determine the "leader" of their faction, or something like that. Once that round is over, you have a top and bottom and middle players in the faction (depending on how you do it). Then the bottom players may get a second chance because of flux warp or something and if they lose they're eliminated. Just a way to make things interesting mid tourney and the like. These rules could be adjusted according the number of players, factions available, tourney themes, etc.
- Themed tourneys where certain factions gain benefits. For example, you're hosting an NAU tourney. Anyone who plays NAU gains an Initiative bonus.
- Tourneys in which players gain UP as they win certain rounds.
- Tourneys incorporating Flux Mutations decks after a certain round
We're open to any other ideas.
What do you think?
See, that's tough. It would really depend on the tournament organizer. But say the minimum number of cards is 25, as long as your character deck had 25 cards, you'd be good.
Personally, I would not have a minimum... If I just wanted to play a 50 UP Race card, for instance, that should be up to me... :P
But some tourney organizers may want to do things differently. It would depend entirely on who was running it.
Unless the rules say otherwise...
This was just the preliminary idea. If we implemented them, they would need polishing and so on.
Coo man coo. :D
A while back I threw this idea - the concept being everyone would have a deck built, and strategically they'd try to reduce their opponent through UP damage or card attrition down to nothing. (I actually got the idea when I bumped into Ben at TBS and he showed me a Churl deck he could tailor to any UP ranging from 50 to 200(!) - why not have everyone bring a character and just slug it out?)
This would be a great way to introduce the game quickly, especially in a con in people can't sit for a whole game demo - just pummel away for 15 min. Lather, rinse, repeat as desired. :)
Yup, I remember that... What should we do with all these good ideas??
Suggestions?
I like the idea Lk.
Honestly, Ashy, I would consider making a master tourney rules list. The basic tourney rules along with special tourney rules and the like.
# 3,467,342 on my list... :P

Looks pretty cool to me! I do have a question about this:

Does this mean if I just want to play with a Race Card and an Aspect Card that I could not?
