I noticed in the flavor text over the Gifts of Oaze pack that it says, With this single, massive deck of Power cards, your character will gain [immense abilities]...All you need do is accept the Untold gifts granted by the Investiture of Oaze! (emphasis mine)
Perfect legitimate, but I figured this pack would be more inclined to supplement more than a single character; however, it only has one Investiture of Oaze inside. Do all/most of the cards have that as a prerequisite? If so, wouldn't this greatly reduce usability among parties unless someone buys a bunch of packs?? I can't read the cards, so this is only a gestimate at best.
(And house rules are an easy way to clear this issue up, if they do require Investiture.)
Similarly with Clockwork Components, there is only one card of arc coils. Yet, I'm totally unfamiliar with lots of the powers inside and not as confident that they rely on as many prereqs.
I trust your capable hands to have carefully combed to make sure steam engines and phlogiston engines aren't necessary, and that any cards that need them are small enough percentage to spread around the wealth of the packs. I just wanted a little peace of mind. :)
In short, how much of these packs are impacted by the need for such things as arc coils and Investiture of Oaze?
That clarifies the construction of the Oaze packs. The Klik makes sense as well; you're marketing subsets of skills and options that build off of each other, which is one thing I love about Untold--it's synergy. :)
As an upfront cost, for a player, that's fine--he's getting a big bang for his buck. Plenty of powers/options and the diversity of Hot Swapping the eyeballs out of the baddies.
As an upfront cost for a party, or a GM looking to open up avenues for his players, it might get to be expensive to get that one prerequisite card. A simple solution will be that, as you expand, maybe add them in along with small, low card L'na packs--like how you did with Taelia.
Or, you could begin a series of Racial Basics with all of those necessary prerequisites inside, which could look like:
- Klik Core: Get Inside Their Heartgear!
- Steam engine
- Arc Coils
- Phlogiston Engine
- Add in a couple of other cards that build off of these, such as Steam Vent, and it would be a great expansion pack.
This can be done similarly with a pack for the L'na with both investitures.
So, my two UP's worth of insight is for a couple of small packs that give the necessary flavor cards to a party of L'na, Klik, or other specialists to make it easier to swap out cards among players from the greater packs of powers that you already have/have on the way.
I hear ya, Benraven, and we're already discussing something along these lines. Let me pose a counter question: if we put together a pack like this, would you still be inclined to purchase if it were something along the lines of this:
Pre-requisite Pack
Get all of the pre-requisite cards needed to unlock the Untold potential for your Splintered Serenity races!
(It would contain cards like "Arc Coils", "Steam Engine", "Investiture of Marou", "Investiture of Oaze", "Commando Training, Basic", etc...)
So what do you think? Would this be something you all would be interested in buying???
It'd be great to have, especially for any GM with an eye for his players (it's basically a pack of what used to be those nasty class restrictions in paper&pen systems--nasty, namely back then, when you didn't have such versatility in points/rules to pick them all up ;).
I'd buy something like that, knowing it would be like buying skills and aspects--you need them, your party needs them, and they are what they are: the gateway to more glorious, greater skills.
And, hey, they usually are useful in themselves from what the little I play tested them!
I'd also have no problem having them in one pack, that makes a lot of sense (less of a "nickel-and-dime" feeling). One option on the name might be something like "Powers: Power Roots" (since they form the 'root' node of a power tree, and 'pre-requisite' is a mouthful). Also, there is an option of having gently different flavors of these, such as an "Investiture of Oaze", where it fills the pre-requisite requirement, but has slightly different incidental traits of its own from the original. This adds 'value' to someone who owns the other already (like a completist like me).
Hurm...good feedback, guys! I like that deck name, Bob - I'll have to stew on it a bit and I need to talk to the guys ASAP. :D Thanks a lot!!! :)
The idea has merit - very similar to Skills and Traits as mentioned. As long as you - the players & buyers do not think it is "card glut," I don't think it would be an issue to build a deck like that.
woot!!!
The Deck Master has spoken! Looking good gang! ;)
Aye, if anything, I think this helps reduce card glut by saving players from having to buy only cetain l'na packs to get the root card for all their favorite powers.
It'll be good to hear what the others/newer players have to say, too. :)
I agree - what do some of you other folks have to say about this idea?
I would not mind if you went race specific with the packs. Maybe 3-6 of the root cards and the rest new powers/ minions/ characters. Just a thought.
That's a cool idea - I like that too, Necroloid! :D
Never let it be said that we don't listen to our fans: http://www.untoldthegame.com/store/foundational-powers
:D :D :D

No, the pack's designed to work with a single character who has the "Investiture of Oaze" Power Card; all of the cards within the pack utilize it as a pre-requisite; with the single exception of "Sigil of Protection", which needs either Investiture of Oaze or Investiture of Marou (coming soon!) to function.
Clockwork Components is similar, but not all those cards have pre-requisites. If they do, it's things like "SML", "Micro Assembler", "Arc Coils", etc...
Is this an issue? If we need a booster pack of "Pre-requisite" cards, I'm pretty sure we can make that happen fairly easily... Let me know!
