Again, not very familiar with the forums yet, so just putting my ideas where I think they belong and fixing it if I'm wrong.
I've always loved space marines. Their sheer intolerance and willingness to just throw numbers at a problem until it gets better... Who wouldn't want to sign up?
Anyways, whenever I play high-bred (my favorite race), I always like to play a guy with space marine ideology. So I figure, why not make a faction of them?
Enter the Pure-bred. A faction of high-bred that believe in racial superiority and a distaste for all things killable.
The Pure-bred are arrogant and violent. A high-bred that would even consider working with a Churl or a L'na is obviously not right in the head to them. They believe in 'if it can't be controlled it must be killed'. They may not understand it in full, but results go a long way with them.
Their abilities take a major turn from the usual high-bred involving such functions as getting a bonus to attack if they fail to identify something, a bonus to movement and initiative if moving in a row, and the ability to use other people as shields. I mean, hey, what can't be killed by throwing manpower at it, right?
As a group, the pure-bred would be relatively small and non-influential, but have lots of gusto and a sheer lack of interest in long-term consequences. They set up propaganda and actively recruit other high-bred. Their primary goal is to ensure the absolute survival of the pure-bred and the removal of churl and "vagrants" (referring to lifeforms from L'na and The Great Machine) from Apoc-Earth. They aren't conquer-happy. They don't plot invasions and they aren't terribly underhanded utilizing the idea that they are better than everyone. So no assassinations, no sneak attacks, etc. They're equipped to fight an opponent head-on and with indiscriminate force. Another pure-bred gets in the line of fire? Collateral. Civilians in the way? Collateral. Some kind of civilization or fragile ecosystem near a planned bombing? Collateral.
Ultimately self-defeating the repercussions of their actions usually serve as motivation for the Pure-bred try harder and be bigger jerks to just about everyone and every thing.
Ideas/suggestions welcomed.
I was thinking about setting them up in more third-world regions like Africa and parts of Asia. It'd be an ironic play to set them in Africa especially as the Pure-bred are racial supremacists and the continent has the largest history of genocide in the name of ethnic cleansing. With that in mind it'd be easy to install morality into a campaign. Possibly even increase global awareness? At any rate, the irony aside it seems most of the high-bred are in pretty top-notch areas so that effectively leaves third-world territories to the pure-bred.
I'm also thinking that pure-bred are less interested in keeping the undead at bay so they'll have better equipment like armor and guns, but obviously you can't just throw caution to the wind so they still play it safe.
To paint an idea of what I think their armor is like, take the NAU armor. Its form-fitting and functional. It increases vitality and all that goodness. LPB (League of Pure-Breeds (working name)) armor would be plated, encapsulate the entire body including the face, and act as mild hazmat gear. In short, vitality goes WAY WAY up, but body DEF plummets like mad. It would also have resistance to corrosive and toxic effects (resulting in making it harder to destroy). If you want, you could even have a sensors upgrade that could increase the body ATK of the user. Granted this is technology. GM approval and increased risk of undead encounters if the thing is powered up. The armor would weigh upwards of 100-150 pounds, and would effectively make the person inside seem larger as the suit is rather bulky. The face shield is also a plate with eye and mouth slots unless you get the sensors upgrade. Also, tragically, the suit cannot be put on or taken off by oneself. Either you take time with the help of the team to put it on or take it off, or you go into the field and leave it on the entire mission regardless of the potent acid that is or isn't burning through it.
What the card may look like:
Card Type: Power
Card Name: LPB Armor
Swap Type: Time Swap
Level: 6?
Body Attributes: -4 body def
Action: standard
Duration: instant
Range: touch
VIT boost: 10 (if a body attack)
Game Information: Hazmat(All chemical attacks targeting this card have their damage reduced by half.) LPB Armor cannot be equipped or removed without the aid of an external creature or device. If LPB armor is destroyed, the -4 body def remains until the suit is removed.
Magnitude: N/A
Flavor Text: Armor employed by Pure-Breds to maintain their ground and succeed.
Flavor Quote: "You ain't gettin' through this you low-life!"
Keep 'em coming, M3! I'm liking the inclusion of them into Africa, suren! Works well with some other plans that we have brewing there. Please keep developing these ideas!
Weapons:
Missile launchers
Flamethrowers
Heavy Machine Guns
Gauss Rifles
Tactical satellites (if it misses it's gonna hit SOMETHING)
Pulse-grenades (anti-Klik weapon)
Incendiary grenades
Flux grenades
Caustic grenades
Gear:
Vital Bomb (should the character's vitals fail, they explode)
LPB armor
Enhanced-Construction-Suit (for quick base construction and low-tech mech armor)
Chemical Injectors
Sensor Gear
Repair Nanos (can repair broken equipment
Powers:
Follow me - Units behind this one get a movement bonus and a bonus to initiative
The heck is that? - If the character fails to identify something, they get a bonus to attacking it
Front line - All characters standing to the sides of this one gain a bonus to body atk
Agression - +body boost for a set amount of turns (can exceed MAG caps), -body atk and body def after for a set amount of turns
These are all rough ideas. I know we need to keep the game balanced but the ideology of the Pure-bred is, to be frank, not a very cautious one. Their bases can be plagued by undead constantly and they could be having a tough time with ammo and the like. The point behind these guys is that they hit hard and they get hit hard all the time. Also, you'll notice how indiscriminate their weapons are allowing pure-breds to be as much a danger to themselves and their teams as they are to the enemy.
No really sure what flux grenades would do. Either or a really nasty explosion or, an idea the hatted one came up with, it shuffles around player powers a bit.
RE: Power shuffling - Actually, I think Will had that idea. Still an interesting one, but I think it might wind up causing some problems at the table if everyone owns their own cards (the ideal goal!).
Ok, so I was chatting with the hatted one and he suggested I delve into backstory a bit more.
The League of Pure-Bred are based in South Africa. After the event, the high-bred there quickly based all the problems they encountered on just about everything but themselves and almost all the blame was thrust onto the klik and L'na as well (and in some cases especially) the churl as their communities began to take root. Using them as scapegoats, Pure-Bred go through life believing themselves to be superior in every way and the last true remnant of pre-Event Earth.
As time went on the call of the Pure-Bred went out, inviting all high-bred to join the cause. Their numbers grew across the world, but as it was mostly a handful of soldiers on any given base, the Pure-Bred are still largely confined as a faction to the African continent.
In response to the increase of Klik and L'na, Pure-Bred invest a lot of time and energy into finding ways to eliminate or subjugate them, and while anti-Klik technology has been refined (largely developed in response to Dyne-Myte infestations), the Pure-Bred are still working on an anti-L'na device. In the meantime the African Pure-Bred have procured a handful of nuclear warheads, and move them from base to base occasionally for research and security purposes.
Having access to LPB armor and hazmat gear, the Pure-Bred employ corrosive weaponry and the occasional radioactive device to do a lot of their wide-spread dirty work. As the Pure-Bred use fire, chemicals, and raw destructive power in their efforts, they blame the negative environmental effects they produce on the other races, only further increasing their resolve.
The Pure-Bred are also very fond of reprogramming Klik for menial labor, and dissecting Klik and L'na for a better understanding of both races.
Pure-Bred take a stance of superiority and disdain, but not total hostility. Under grounds of defense or invited liberation do they extend their territory. This is sometimes plotted by agents within a base or region with the use of subterfuge or propaganda.
If there's any part of this you'd like me to delve deeper into, feel free to point it out and I most likely can.
Very cool stuff here, M3! Keep it comin! :)
Oh and Power shuffling is something that we've been playing around with for a while. Goes along with a little something called a "Flux Deck" that we're working on. ;)
Pure-Bred have investitures in hazmat gear and heavy plating and are very fond of combining the two in their gear. Since employing hazmat technology, they have few reservations about using chemicals in their warfare, favoring corrosive weaponry for when bullets and fire don't seem to cut it.
Pure-Bred work closer to a rank system than the rest of the high-bred maintaining a leader and a network of subordinates to make sure things happen. While based on a militant structure, their method of orders closer resembles that of government. Given that each group has a leader one tier above them, battlefield formation tactics have been remarkably well-preserved. On the other hand, with a superiors system, battlefield control is well maintained, but only as well as the superior officer is able to perform. Should he be dispatched, the situation is likely to deteriorate very quickly. This problem also develops further as the pure-bred are a wide-spread, low-population group. (the latter tactics apply more in war games than untold campaigns)
The current head of the LPB is Admirable Howard. A common trait among the LPB is to give soldiers of distinction a title. These titles are derived from the old days before the event, and as such the idea of rank, military branch, and sometimes even spelling and pronunciation are in error. Adm. Howard founded the LPB and has since led it to the effective state that it is in now. A diplomat as well as a soldier, Adm. Howard seeks the reclamation of the Earth and a united high-bred army under the LPB banner.
What else would you like to see attached to this? Give me specifics and I'll make it happen.
I really need to know where to funnel some more concepts because I really don't want to see these guys go down the gutter and not get incorporated.
Keep working on them, M3! Rome was not built in a day. ;)
The purpose of the pure-bred in the grand-scheme of things is simple. Their goal is outward and upward, restoring lost technology, making new technology, preserving the Earth as humanity's home, and eventually expanding even further out. The LPB have little interest in the Great Machine or Ai, but dammit the Earth is theirs and it should stay that way.
One dilemma the players may run into is that, indeed, the LPB do awful things on a regular basis. On the flip side, if the LPB were to disband, it could severely hinder the recovery of the modern world by centuries.
Their onward and upward campaign, for instance, has been fruitful in linking up with a few old satellites in orbit that weren't utterly destroyed by the event or time itself. The LPB are very tech-heavy citing that the Klik are milenia ahead of humans and the L'na have magic. They also argue that the klik and L'na have whole universes from which they belong while the humans have only the little-bitty rock known as Earth. Being outclassed, outnumbered, and with less territory to their name, it's easy to see why the LPB have such an intolerant view of the other races.
Edit: This is the result of a discussion between Hall, MHM, and myself. I'd appreciate it if you guys would post in here to help me flesh these folks out a bit more.

I'd love to see some possible concepts for integrating them into the "standard" Splintered Serenity setting (if that is indeed the goal), but overall a very interesting concept!
