Telling Your Untold Story: Choosing Your Untold Character

So, now you know about Untold, and you get to demo the game. The hardest question you will now be hit with is “What character shall I play?” For some of you, as it was for me, this question seems like a simple one. You have already chosen your character. Perhaps in other games, you have always played the barbarian. You read about Toa, and you know he is your character. Or maybe you have always played a magic user, you choose a L’na. Or maybe you like the idea of the Kliks because they are somewhat unique to an RPG. But is this character really you?

Perhaps not.

I was given the chance to demo Untold, and I thought my character choice was very easy. I have always played a magic user, usually a druid. Many of my spells involved nature magic or spells in which I would transform into all or part of an animal (Aspect of the Wolf, Claws of the Bear, Fire Wings). So my character is chosen even before the character descriptions were finished. I chose to play Apenimon that day, and I enjoyed him. He had some great spells that aided his companions, gave him wings, and provided an armor of scales. But for me, something was missing.

I returned home that night and started reading more about the characters and the universes that they called home. I would not normally, if ever, view myself playing a robot in any shape or form. But for some reason, Buzzsaw struck my fancy. I returned the next day to demo a second game, and this time, I tried out Buzzsaw.

I loved him! He is different from everything I had ever played. His movements are unique; his thought process (while not stupid or barbaric) is not overly complex but is instead focused on the task at hand. He even earned the nickname “Slash” during the campaign because he ruined Apenimon’s listen check by clear-cutting the forest with his chainsaw. He has some great weapons and abilities, and even an ability to aid another player in a battle. He became an instant favorite with me, and will probably remain my character of choice for a very long time (or until I decide to try a new one).

While playing Buzzsaw, I noticed how strong he was as a combatant. The one card I love, and tell everyone who plays him to look for, is the “Deadly Strike” card. It is a free action that you can play when you play one of his action cards, or if you pay for it each turn, you can just leave it out there, which works great when a group of minions comes swinging. Essentially, the card gives Buzzsaw a bonus to the damage he can cause. How great is that?! Especially when you are fighting a big mean and nasty?! This card works great with his “Adamantine Blades” (think Wolverine only cooler!), which actually triples the damage bonus he gets!

The other cards I enjoyed were the “Torch” and “Torch 2” cards. They both allow a triple bonus if “Deadly Strike” is out there. They also force the target to suffer UP damage even if the magnitude is less than the target’s vitality. Another combat card I enjoyed was the “Claw Shears”. Why is this card great? Because it deals 39 UP of damage all by itself!! This does not include any bonuses, such as from “Deadly Strike”. It’s also not an overly expensive card, costing only 28 UP.

The final card that I have to share with you is the “Lamp” card, which is also a free action. What Klik would be complete without a lamp or lantern to help light the way of the adventurers? Even though he disrupted the peace with his “Saw”, Buzzsaw was able to light up the surrounding forest and ruins, which aided the others to see what was attacking them. So, to me, Buzzsaw is one awesome machine!

So while many of you have already picked out your character because it is similar to one you played in the past, I suggest you consider trying something new. Maybe you would never play a gun-wielding human or a robot with a ball for feet or even a shape-shifting spellcaster, but try them out. This game is so diverse in its character-creating abilities that you could end up with a character that you would never have considered playing in the past.

So when you go to pick your character, try playing one that you would not normally play. You may find out that you have a new favorite character type.

Excellent article Jennifer. I generally don't enjoy playing the big burly "I hit it with my axe" type characters, but I am with you. Untold adds a dynamic which made Toa extremely enjoyable for me to play. So I am right there with you. Try something new and you might just find out you like it.
