Cap's Con Report

Ashy's picture

Captain Blood here! Cap to all my convention buddies! Ashy asked me to give my impressions of Mobicon this year and more importantly the Mobicon debut of Untold the Game. Off the bat: it was a fantastic weekend! I have not had so much fun running a game in a very long time. I thank all my players for that.

We had a rough start with Friday, Ashy and I only managed about three hours sleep the night before. I dozed on the drive down from Huntsville. Ashy says it was hour, but I don’t think so. Thanks to Waffle House Coffee we had the Wandering Men table set up and ready to go for the opening of the Dealer’s Room and we were off! In their flurry of pre-con activity, the Wandering Men were unable to organize demos ahead of time with the convention, but the staff was very helpful and said it wouldn’t be a problem to fit us in.

As we manned the booth, the interest in Untold began to grow as folks took in the art work and Ashy’s signature sales pitch.
Ben and Jenn, fans of the Wandering Men’s Skein of Shadows were a great help in spreading the word of Untold.

Saturday saw our return with a little bit more sleep and a lot of enthusiasm. Once we had the table in the Dealer’s Room set up we left Davis to hold the fort for the Wandering Men as Ashy and I went to the Game Room. Ben and Jenn were there, ready to play; others quickly joined us and Ashy was running a demo adventure called Bad Beginnings. The adventure Bad Beginnings is a straight forward con adventure by Brannon (Ashy) Hollingsworth and Nathan Ellsworth, designed for heroes with a 100 UP (Untold Point) build. We had Toa, the Apoc Churl, Apenimon, the L’na spell caster, the Klik, Designation: Roller, I had final pick and ran Sarge, an Apoc Highbred.

The adventure went well; the heroes were inventive and used their abilities and the mechanics of Untold to great effect. As we played other con-gamers were milling about, peering over our shoulders taking in the array of bright, graphic, cards. A lot of folks were asking when the next demo session would be ready for play. So we knew ol’ Cap would be running somethin’. Everyone had a good time and Jerry; our Klik came away with MVP and Untold stuff!

Round two of demos saw Nathan and me at different tables running. The same heroes were in play, but with different points of view. At my table, Crash, that’s the player, was running Sarge by apparently channeling the spirit of Deadpool! Swords were flashing and grenades were flying!

Once the group understood how Story and Site Swaps worked to alter the effectiveness of a character, that’s when things really got interesting for me! Apenimon, run by a great player named Joe, was very effective in making his companions deadly, well even more deadly, with his support spells. He came up with an AWESOME character rationale to alter his character's ABS in order to make the L'na even more effective – changing his character right in the middle of game play. Thanks Joe, for illustrating perfectly the power of Untold as a story telling tool!

Saturday night was spent at a great sea food place with the extended Wandering Man family, then back to the hotel for the evening events at the con.

Sunday morning started with not much sleep but I decided to have a blast going without! I went to the Game Room with a box of miscellaneous cards and only an adventure in my head. Fortunately I am working on a new con adventure for the Wandering Men to debut at Dragon Con this year called Down on the Bayou. The synopsis had been written so I knew the encounters I wanted to run and the general abilities that the monsters should have. So I sat down and with the cards I had to build the monsters from Bad Beginnings.
I had no problem giving the creatures exactly the abilities I wanted them to have, just changing the “special effect” of the attack. Which was AWESOME! Ten minutes with and idea and cards I was up and running, ready for a 7th-8th level adventure! That's just a little benefit of playing Untold - flexibility.

Ben and Jenn came back for more punishment and I thought I was going to run a session just for them, and then Joe came to my rescue-sorta- he brought me more players! This time, we had the full compliment of heroes with both Klik: Buzzsaw and Roller, both the L'na: Apenimon and Taelia, a L’na Dawn, and both Apoc: Toa and Sarge. Thanks once again to Ben and Jenn for helping me with initial character set up for the new players of Untold. Their experienced help (from the day before) made our start up a breeze.

When the heroes stopped in the ruins of a forgotten city Roller decided that the ground was too wet so proceeded to use his flame thrower to dry the ground and Buzzsaw wanted to clear his field of vision and started using the chainsaw built in his arm. So they were then designated as Slash and Burn. This Scorched Earth policy of course ruined Apenimon’s chances to see the attacking monsters!

This attack also gave Toa the idea that the “monkey-pigs” (a.k.a. Ruin Stalkers, some new baddies coming out soon from Untold) would make good eating. So when the massacre was done, the ten foot tall Apoc enjoyed haunch of monkey-pig.

The rest of the adventure saw great role play from everyone with a special shout out to Archie, who really got into the nature magic aspect of the L’na. Once again the flexibility of the system allowed the heroes to be devastatingly effective. This of course has given me the opportunity to see how Down in the Bayou will play out and allow for a few GM tweaks. (Insert maniacal/evil laughter here). The only down side of the session was that Hall, the fourth Wandering Man and a fantastic artist, was unable to use his favorite Klik Gearloose in my game.

Judging from the feed back I received at the table and what Nathan and Ashy received during the whole convention, Untold had stirred up excitement and a whole lot of interest. In my opinion, Mobicon this year was a wild success.

Thanks for reading! Thanks for playing!
